The mission of the Department of Eye Diseases is to use state of the art technology, knowledge and expertise to preserve the eye health of society, to contribute to medical advances made in the field of eye diseases and to train successful ophthalmologists of the future. Academic members of staff at the diagnosis and treatment units of Atakent, Maslak, Ankara and Kayseri Acıbadem Hospitals provide a wide range of options at international standards.The department is one of the first in Turkey to use the Kamra inlay and Supracor methods for presbyopia (long-sightedness occurring after 40 years of age.
The following fields of eye diseases are treated:
Cataract and Refractive Surgery: Our clinic is leader in the field of refractive surgery which is used to eliminate dependency on glasses or contact lenses. We successfully perform eye laser treatments including LASIK, Femto-LASIK, PRK, LASEK, individualized wavefront and corneal topography, and Supracor; refractive lensectomy and phakic intraocular lens implantations. The Femto and excimer laser are cutting edge equipment which undergo regular maintenance with specialist engineers. Our experienced staff members perform both cataract surgery for long-sightedness or multifocal lens applications using the latest phaco equipment.
The Diagnosis and Treatment of Corneal Diseases, Corneal Transplants: The transparent layer of the eye is called the cornea. We offer a full range of diagnosis and treatment options for corneal diseases including keratoconus. We use advanced assessment devices including computerized topography (corneal mapping), aberrometry, pachymetry (measuring the thickness of the cornea) and specular microscopy (corneal cell count) to diagnose corneal diseases. Our clinic successfully performs treatment procedures including corneal implants (INTACS), cross-linking and corneal transplants.
Contact Lenses: Patients are provided with information regarding contact lenses and are assisted in selecting the most suitable lens type (soft lenses, toric lenses) and multifocal lenses. Patients who are trying lenses for the first time are taught how to use and take care of contact lenses. We also offer special hybrid and rigid contact lenses for patients who are suffering keratoconus which is a progressive corneal disease.
The Glaucoma Unit: Our clinic is fully equipped with state of the art technology used to diagnose and treat glaucoma which is also known as the "eye pressure" disease. Devices used include tonometry to determine intraocular pressure, the ORA system which measures eye pressure independently of the thickness of the cornea, computerized field of vision devices, and nerve fiber thickness mapping. In addition to medical treatment, glaucoma can also be treated using lasers and surgery.
The Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Clinic treat all pediatric and adult patients suffering strabismus. Treatment includes prescribing glasses and contact lenses as well surgery and Botox applications. Lazy eyes are treated using eye patches as well as Revital Vision and AmbP iNet computerized treatment systems.
The Oculoplastic Surgical Clinic corrects all functional and esthetic issues concerning the eyelids and the area surrounding the eyes. We perform tests (lavage, dacryocystography, dacryoscintigraphy) and surgery (probing, open and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy, duct implants) for tear ducts. Ptosis (drooping eyelids) surgery, blepharoplasty (esthetic eyelid surgery) and Botox injections are also amongst the services offered. The bespoke ocular prosthesis surgery we perform has superior results.
Medical and Surgical Retina-Vitreous Applications: Macular degeneration (age-related yellow spot disease) and diabetic retinopathy are common problems which threaten the eye health of society. The clinic also treats other retina diseases which affect vision including blocked blood vessels, subconjunctival hemorrhages, torn/detached retinas, macular holes (yellow spot break), and epiretinal membranes (a thin membrane which forms on yellow spots). These diseases are diagnosed using state of the art equipment including B scan ultrasonography, macula OCT and angiography. Treatment procedures include argon laser, vitrectomy, silicone oil and retinal detachment surgery.
Uvea Diseases: The diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of “uveitis”, which is an inflammation of the uvea which can develop as a result of a variety of reasons, is performed using a multidisciplinary approach.
Neuro-ophthalmology: The field of neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty dealing with diseases which affect the optic nerve which connects the eye and the brain, and optic tracts. A variety of diseases of the central nervous system including strokes, infections, multiple sclerosis and tumors as well as systemic diseases can affect the structures between the eye and the brain. These diseases are diagnosed in a fully equipped electrophysiology unit where specialized tests such as VEP, ERG and EOG are performed in collaboration with the Department of Neurology.
